best slimline dishwashers

If you want to skip the washing up but don't have the space for a bulky appliance, the best slimline dishwashers are great for slotting into more compact kitchens.

Typically 45cm wide (25% smaller than the standard 60cm models), slimline dishwashers work in the exact same way as regular ones, while saving precious under-counter space. To find the very best, the Good Housekeeping Institute tested the leading models from both budget and high-end brands.

Best slimline dishwashers 2025

Our scores for slimline dishwashers are based on their performance across eco, normal and intensive cycles. This includes how effectively they tackle tricky dried-on foods – and for the intensive wash, tougher burnt-on stains. In testing, our experts judge how clean and dry they leave the dishes, and measure water and energy consumption. We also take into account general design and ease of use.

These are our experts’ top-rated slimline dishwashers, for sparkling results without taking up space.

Energy and water cost calculations are based on current prices at the time of writing: 25.73p per kWh and 0.3p per litre.

Bosch Series 4 Free-standing 45cm Dishwasher SPS4HMW49G

Series 4 Free-standing 45cm Dishwasher SPS4HMW49G

Pros

  • Effective cleaning
  • Quiet
  • Cutlery drawer instead of basket gives more space and flexibility

Cons

  • Low energy efficiency rating

Score: 93/100

Powerful, quiet and compact, this slimline dishwasher left our dirty dishes gleaming and dry. The normal and economy cycles both scored full marks for cleaning, and the normal cycle was very efficient, costing just 20p in energy and water costs. We were also impressed with the SpeedPerfect+ cycle, which achieved the same results in half the time – just with slightly higher energy and water consumption.

Our testers particularly liked having a cutlery drawer instead of a basket, which frees up space for more plates. This dishwasher lost a few marks on its intensive wash, which was still fairly economical at 28p, but left some burnt-on jam and pasta sauce on our Pyrex dishes. However, none of the models we tested were able to fully shift all these ‘worst-case scenario’ stains. Overall, this is an excellent buy at a reasonable price.

AEG Series 7000 GlassCare Dishwasher 45cm

Series 7000 GlassCare Dishwasher 45cm

Pros

  • Effective cleaning
  • Secures stemmed glasses against breakage
  • Cutlery drawer instead of basket

Cons

  • Relatively expensive

Score: 91/100

The normal and eco modes of this dishwasher left our plates gleaming, with both only costing around 20p per wash in the lab. Unlike some others we tested, we had no trouble fitting 10 place settings inside, possibly because it’s a bit larger than most – so make sure you check the measurements before committing.

We liked the intuitive controls, cutlery drawer and automatic door opening that helps dry your dishes. Another great feature is the SoftGrip system, which keeps stemmed glasses secure – brilliant if you hate hand-washing your wine glasses. Like other models, the intensive cycle struggled to shift really burnt-on food. It’s on the expensive side too, but worth it for great cleaning and genuinely useful features.

Kenwood Slimline Dishwasher KDW45X23

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Slimline Dishwasher KDW45X23

Pros

  • Very user-friendly
  • Affordable
  • Quiet

Cons

  • Struggles to fit 10 plate settings

Score: 90/100

At half the price of many lower-scoring dishwashers, this model represents outstanding value for money. The normal and eco cycles performed brilliantly, leaving plates almost perfect and very dry – plus, the eco wash only cost an average of 18p in the lab. Our testers also loved how user-friendly the design is, with logical and responsive controls.

This dishwasher runs quietly, and doesn’t skimp on features either: it has an ‘auto’ cycle (calculated by the soiling sensor), auto-opening door, 24-hour delay timer and child lock. On the downside, we struggled to fit the recommended 10 place settings inside, possibly because it has a cutlery basket instead of a drawer. It couldn’t shift burnt-on stains, either. But at this price, it’s hard to complain.

Smeg 45cm Fully Integrated Dishwasher DI4522

45cm Fully Integrated Dishwasher DI4522

Pros

  • Seamless appearance behind cabinetry

Cons

  • Low energy efficiency rating
  • Controls sometimes unresponsive

Score: 89/100

If you prefer your dishwasher to blend into your kitchen, this integrated model is designed to be hidden behind a cabinet door. It can fit up to nine place settings, so it’s on the smaller side, but has useful features such as automatic door opening (for dryer plates), leak detection and timer delay.

This was the best integrated dishwasher we tested, providing an excellent clean on its normal and eco cycles – though heavier burnt-on stains proved too tough. It’s not the most efficient, at around 26p per eco wash, and the controls (located inside the door) were a little unresponsive. But overall, this is a really solid buy if you’re looking for an integrated design.

Integrated Slimline Dishwasher BDIS38040Q

Pros

  • Energy and water efficient
  • Seamless appearance behind cabinetry
  • Top cutlery drawer that can hold sharp items

Cons

  • Controls sometimes unresponsive

Score: 87/100

This integrated slimline dishwasher scored highly for energy and water efficiency across the board, with the eco cycle costing just 17p per wash. It left our dishes very clean – even our saucepans with cooked-on egg and rice – though some items were a little wet. We also found the Fast+ function managed to achieve the same level of cleanliness as the normal cycle, but with less time, energy and water.

We liked how this dishwasher shines a light on the floor to let you know it’s running, as the integrated display is hidden when closed. We also love that it has a top cutlery drawer, with spaces for sharp knives – just take care not to knock wine glasses below. The touch controls were sometimes unresponsive, but all in all, this is another excellent integrated option.

H-DISH 500 Slimline Dishwasher HF0C3SB0FX-80

Pros

  • High energy efficiency rating – eco cycle particularly efficient
  • Easy-to-use and helpful app with lots of extra functions
  • Lots of smart features

Cons

  • Struggles with heavy soiling

Score: 86/100

This dishwasher’s eco cycle was exceptional for energy and water efficiency, costing an average of just 17p per wash in the lab. And if you’re into ‘smart’ home technology, you’ll love optimising it even further with the easy-to-use hOn app. As well as remotely controlling your dishwasher, this app can rate the efficiency of your loading (great for competitive stackers!) and even suggest which cycle to choose.

As for the performance, this model struggled more than others to shift burnt-on stains in the intensive cycle. However, the normal and eco cycles provided a great clean on our regular plates and cups. Unlike some other slimline models, it can comfortably fit 10 place settings, too. So for everyday dishes, this is a really solid, efficient buy at a decent price.

I-Pro Shine Series 5 Wifi Connected Slimline Dishwasher XF1C3TB1FW-80

Pros

  • Eco cycle very water and energy efficient
  • Excellent extra drying programme
  • Lots of features

Cons

  • Normal and intensive cycles have high energy and water usage
  • Struggles with heavy soiling

Score: 84/100

As well as providing a great clean, this dishwasher excels at drying dishes – especially if you add the ‘extra dry’ option to a cycle. Our testers loved the easy controls and plethora of features, including a foldable and removable cutlery rack, a half-load option and app connectivity. The eco cycle was highly efficient too, costing just 18p per wash.

On the downside, the normal and intensive cycles had higher energy and water usage (costing 38p and 41p respectively), yet couldn’t shift burnt-on food. We also only managed to fit eight place settings in this dishwasher, despite it claiming to accommodate 11. Great for small households who simply want to get their everyday plates clean and cupboard-dry.

  • Seamless integration behind cabinetry
  • Easy-to-use and helpful app with lots of extra functions

Cons

  • Normal and intensive cycles have high energy and water usage

Score: 83/100

Because integrated slimline dishwashers have hidden displays, we love that this one has app connectivity, so you can see what’s going on without opening the door. We found the compatible hOn app responsive and easy to use, giving advice on loading efficiency and cycle options as well as controlling the machine remotely.

This dishwasher’s eco cycle was the cheapest we tested, at just 16p per wash – excellent value for everyday use. The normal and intensive cycles were much less efficient (costing 39p and 46p respectively), but the intensive cycle fared better than others at cleaning heavily soiled cookware, particularly pans. A good value integrated option for the everyday cook.

How we test slimline dishwashers

To score these slimline dishwashers, our Good Housekeeping Institute experts assess their performance across a normal cycle, eco cycle and two intensive cycles. For normal and eco cycles, we soil dishes, glasses and cutlery with dried-on substances such as porridge, lipstick, tomato and tea. The intensive cycles must also tackle saucepans and Pyrex dishes with trickier stains, like burnt-on egg, rice and sauce. Some clean items are also added to all cycles, to see if they get splattered.

We measure the water and energy consumption of each cycle, before carefully unloading the dishes to see how well the stains have shifted and how dry they are. We also take into account the general design of the dishwasher and how easy it is to use (including the instructions and any apps), before calculating a final score.

Why trust the Good Housekeeping Institute?

The Good Housekeeping Institute has been testing products for over a century, and dishwashers undergo some of our lab’s most intense reviews. The team spends days dirtying all kinds of dishes and crockery with identical stains and running wash cycles on repeat.

These tests are overseen by Blossom Boothroyd, our homes testing manager, who has put countless dishwashers through our rigorous assessments. She then passes on the results to our homes writer, Jasmine Vorley, who is highly experienced in writing about appliances, homeware and design.

What to consider when buying a slimline dishwasher

  • Efficiency: Choosing a dishwasher with a high energy efficiency rating will save you money in the long run, as well as being better for the environment. Low water consumption is also a plus – and means less water to heat too. Most dishwashers have an ‘eco mode’, which will minimise energy and water consumption.
  • Capacity: Slimline dishwashers usually claim to fit 10 place settings, so consider whether this is a good size for you and how often you’ll need to run the dishwasher. Also bear in mind that we find dishwashers can struggle to actually fit the recommended number of place settings – so check real-world reviews like ours!
  • Appearance: If you find dishwashers an eyesore, integrated models are designed to be hidden behind a cabinet (with a control panel inside the door) for a seamless look. Freestanding dishwashers are more visible, but they’re cheaper and easier to install and repair. Scroll down to read more about freestanding versus integrated dishwashers.
  • Warranty: Your dishwasher may well need repairs in the future, so it’s a good idea to opt for one with a long warranty. This can vary between retailers, so make sure you read the fine print to see what the company actually covers.
  • Extra features: Today's dishwashers can have lots of extra features – but they’re only worth it if you’ll actually use them! Adjustable racks are great for accommodating large pans or tall glasses. Smart features allow you to customise the cycle, start it remotely and be notified when it’s done. Child locks stop curious children from opening the door or pushing buttons, and automatic door opening helps dishes dry fast.

Energy efficiency ratings explained

To help you find the most cost-effective and eco-friendly appliances, dishwashers are rated for energy efficiency on a scale of A to G. A-rated appliances use the least amount of energy and water, and G-rated appliances use the most.

In 2021, the old scale that ran from A+++ to D was retired, to accommodate improved efficiency in modern appliances. So if you see a rating below A or B, this doesn’t necessarily mean the product is an energy guzzler!

A dishwasher’s rating is normally determined by the ‘eco’ cycle, which is designed to be the most efficient – though it usually takes longer. When choosing a dishwasher, consider the running costs versus the upfront price, as well as which cycle you’re likely to use most often.

Freestanding versus integrated dishwashers

Whereas freestanding dishwashers are fully visible, with a control panel on the front, integrated dishwashers are designed to go incognito behind cabinetry. The control panel of an integrated dishwasher is usually located inside the door, for a seamless finish.

Integrated dishwashers tend to be quieter than freestanding, because the cabinet insulates them against noise. But though they look great, they’re usually more expensive than freestanding models – and the cost of installation with a custom door will be higher. They’re also more difficult to access for maintenance.

Freestanding dishwashers have their own exterior casing and control panel on the front, so they’re more visible. They tend to be louder, too. However, they’re cheaper and easier to buy, install, move around, repair and replace. The option you choose will ultimately depend on your budget and design priorities.

Are dishwashers more efficient than washing up by hand?

For larger loads, a dishwasher generally uses significantly less water and energy than washing by hand. You can optimise this by running full loads of dirty dishes, skipping the pre-rinse (it’s not necessary, we promise) and choosing a more energy-efficient model.

A dishwasher will do a better job than you, too. Because the water in a dishwasher gets hotter than anything human hands can tolerate, your dishes will be properly sanitised.
