best coverless duvet

Changing your bedding can sometimes feel like a real workout – all that sheet wrangling can be exhausting. But, here to take the hassle out of this weekly (or fortnightly if we're being honest) chore are the best coverless duvets.

Relatively new to the market, we were keen to see if they really deliver the convenience and comfort they promise. So, our experts at the Good Housekeeping Institute put them through rigorous testing in the lab and at home with the help of some sleepy testers.

The best coverless duvets for 2025

Whether you’re after a stylish design for your guest room or you want a simple, budget-friendly bedspread that's easy to wash for a child's bedroom, we've found a range of options worth splashing out on.

And if our tested options aren't quite right, then our editors have also included some of their favourite designs below, so you'll be sure to find something that suits your needs.

To find the best, we asked a panel of at-home testers to trial a range of coverless duvets and share their thoughts on design, comfort, washing and breathability. Find out more about our in-depth testing process below our reviews, plus everything you need to know about coverless duvets before buying.

All prices listed are for a standard double duvet.

Night Lark Tufted Dots Coverless Duvet, 10.5 Tog

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Tufted Dots Coverless Duvet, 10.5 Tog

Pros

  • Well constructed with no loose stitching
  • Minimal shrinkage and no fading in the wash
  • Our panel found it lightweight but warm
  • Comes with a handy storage bag
  • Made in a zero waste factory, which runs on 100% certified renewable energy

Cons

  • The double 10.5 tog duvet was a tight fit in a standard washing machine
  • Not everyone loved the design and textured finish

Score: 97/100

Available in a choice of warm sand or dusk blue shades, with a dotted textured finish, our experts found this coverless duvet well made and sturdy, with secure stitching. It didn't fade in the wash and there was minimal shrinkage.

The built-in cover is crafted with peachskin microfibres for a silky soft finish and it has a 100% Smartfil® Polyester filling from recycled PET bottles, which, as well as being more eco-friendly and hypoallergenic, is designed to hold its shape wash after wash.

Our panel found it lightweight, yet warm (we tested the 10.5 tog option, but there's also a 4.5 tog version available), and liked that it came with its own duffel storage bag. The design proved a little divisive – some would have preferred a smooth finish and there are only the two colour options – but otherwise, it was soft to the touch, straightforward to wash and quick-drying.

Silentnight Coverless Duvet and Pillowcase Set – 10.5 Tog

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Coverless Duvet and Pillowcase Set – 10.5 Tog

Pros

  • Fitted our test mattress well
  • No colour fade and even filling after washing
  • Quality finish
  • No rustling when moving around

Cons

  • Limited colourways
  • Tricky to fit back in its storage bag

Score: 94/100

This Silentnight duvet comes with matching pillowcases and a choice of navy or grey marl finish. Crafted from soft-touch fabric for a luxurious feel, it's machine-washable and dries in 90 minutes.

Our testers liked that it didn't fade during washing and it fitted our test mattress snuggly. The filling was well distributed, even after we put it through a few wash cycles, and it retained its shape well.

Our panel thought it was a well constructed duvet, finding it lightweight, but still cosy. It also didn't rustle at night when they moved around. “I liked the ease of no cover and the tog level was cosy for winter but not too hot,” said one delighted tester. Not everyone liked the dark colourways, but this is a good all-rounder at a great price.

Slumberdown Coverless Duvet Double 10.5-Tog

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Coverless Duvet Double 10.5-Tog

Pros

  • Comfortable and airy
  • Easy to unpack
  • Clear instructions
  • Dries quickly

Cons

  • It did shrink a bit in the wash
  • Our testers had concerns about durability of the fabric
  • The grey tones weren't for everyone

Score: 93/100

Another hypoallergenic pick, you get two designs for the price of one with this reversible Slumberdown duvet and matching pillowcases. Whether you opt for grey stripes or the embossed waffle design, both can be flipped for a plain, but stylish block colour reverse.

Our testers found this duvet lightweight and airy, and it comes generously stuffed with hollow fibres for added softness and bounce. It was also easy to unpack, had clear washing instructions and dried quickly.

It did shrink a bit in our wash tests and some of our panel raised concerns about the long-term durability of the fabric. However, it's a solid pick for comfort and convenience. We think it would work well for spare bedrooms.

Supremely Washable 7.5 Tog Duvet - King

Pros

  • High-quality feel
  • Looked new after multiple washes

Cons

  • May not provide sufficient warmth for winter months

Score: 81/100

“An excellent, cost-effective duvet that’s convenient to wash and dry in a day,” was how one of our satisfied panel members described this coverless duvet from M&S. Others also praised how well it washed, without any shrinkage or change to the filling distribution.

The lightweight design's quick drying time went down well with parents, as it can easily be chucked in the wash and dried in a day. Despite the featherlight design, it didn’t lack in comfort and it proved extremely cosy. It completely transformed the way one panel member’s husband sleeps: “I’ve never known him to have lie-ins like it!” they said.

Eleanor Bowmer x Night Lark Leopard Coverless Duvet & Pillowcase Set

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Leopard Coverless Duvet & Pillowcase Set

Pros

  • Comes with a handy storage bag
  • Maintains quality wash after wash

Cons

  • Some testers found the material a little slippery

Score: 79/100

This colourful set comes in a handy storage bag and coordinating pillowcases. The built-in cover is made from silky peachskin microfibres, which feel really soft against the skin, and the Smartfil fibre filling (which is made from recycled bottles) retained its quality wash after wash in our tests. The duvet is lightweight, but also kept our testers nice and warm. One person even said it kept them cosy on a camping trip!

The design divided our testers, but we think the bright leopard print would be great for a teen's bedroom or anyone who loves colour. Plus, there are lots of other styles to choose from, such as reversible palm trees and stripes, and rainbow polka dots. More is more.

Asda Lightweight Coverless Duvet 7.5 tog

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Lightweight Coverless Duvet 7.5 tog

Pros

  • Can be washed and dried in a day
  • Comes with two pillowcases

Cons

  • Not the softest, cosiest duvet
  • Limited colour options

Score: 71/100

A budget-conscious option, this comes with two pillowcases and a storage bag, making it a reliable pick for kids’ sleepovers and camping trips.

It did a good job of temperature regulation, with one tester saying: “It provides an adequate level of warming without being too hot.” However it’s not the softest option in this round-up and some found it a little rigid. In fact, one said, “I felt like a sandwich and the duvet was a piece of bread that laid on top.” As indicated by the price, it’s not a premium buy, but it is a quick, convenient option to whip out when you have some unexpected guests.

Though there’s no need to wrestle with a duvet cover, getting it back into its storage bag was a bit of a struggle, so it may be best to store it in a blanket pile or pop it in the airing cupboard.

How we test coverless duvets

how we test coverless duvets

We asked a panel of testers to put a range market-leading brands to the test at home, sleeping with them for a few weeks and feeding back on comfort, design and breathability.

Back in the Good Housekeeping Institute lab, each duvet is first assessed for overall quality, construction and size. We then wash and dry them three times, according to the manufacturer’s guidelines, checking for any shrinkage or change in appearance. Finally, we measure any colour fade using our specialist DigiEye machine.

We've also included a selection of duvets that have been picked out by our sleep editors, to offer you plenty of choice, depending on your décor and budget. They haven't been tested in the lab, but our team know what they're looking for when it comes to quality, and all are from brands we have tested or been hands on with in the past.

Why trust the Good Housekeeping Institute

What is a coverless duvet?

These all-in-one solutions come with a soft cover sewn in, so you never have to worry about changing your duvet cover again.

Unlike traditional duvets, which usually have to be dry-cleaned every few months, they're machine-washable for maximum convenience. Many can also be popped in the tumble dryer as well.

Are coverless duvets worth it?

If you struggle with changing your bedding, or it's simply one of those chores you're always putting off, they're certainly worth it. In fact, they have multiple benefits.

  • They're more hygienic as they can be washed regularly, removing any allergens.
  • They're also more cost effective, saving on trips to the dry cleaners and spending on new duvet covers.
  • They're space-saving, as you can say goodbye to piles of duvet covers in your cupboards. Some even come with their own bags for easy storage.

They're particularly handy for younger children and teenagers who may be prone to spillages, as well as for camping trips and travel where bedding can often get muddy, or for anyone who just needs a helping hand with their laundry (read: students). Some people also like to use them in guest bedrooms, as they can be easily freshened up before visitors arrive.

Can you get different designs and togs?

Yes, there are a wide selection of colours and designs available on the market, from florals to ginghams. Just bear in mind that you'll want to hold onto your duvet for a couple of years, so avoid anything you think you'll tire of quickly. A classic stripe or neutral block colour is always a safe pick.

Many coverless duvets also come in a range of togs – a light 4.5 tog one will make the best summer duvet, while a weightier 10.5 tog option will make a top winter duvet. They also come in a range of sizes from single to super king. Note that higher tog, super king options will be more of a squeeze for your washing machine, so read the manufacturer's advice before buying.

How often should you wash a coverless duvet?

When it comes to washing, always follow the manufacturer's instructions, but generally, you should wash your coverless duvet every one to two weeks, in the same way as the rest of your bedding.

“We’d recommend more frequent washing compared to a regular duvet as it comes into direct contact with the skin,” says Danielle Mason, Head of Product Development at The Fine Bedding Company. “We’d therefore advise washing your coverless duvet every two weeks (or weekly, depending on how often you like to wash your bedding) to ensure a hygienic bedroom environment (avoiding the build up of dirt, dead skin cells, dust mites and makeup).”

Most brands recommend washing between 30 and 40C.

The verdict on coverless duvets

Our winner, the Night Lark Tufted Dots Coverless Duvet, ticked all our boxes – it’s washable, stylish and functional, helping our panel enjoy a great night’s sleep. It earns bonus points for its eco-credentials with a polyester filling made from recycled PET bottles, too.

Our runner up, Silentnight's Coverless Duvet and Pillowcase Set, is also our best budget option on the list. It's extremely soft on the skin, washes quickly, and comes in at just over £20.

Get two coverless duvets for the price of one with Slumberdown's Coverless Duvet, as the reversible design means you can choose between a patterned or plain side. Thankfully, this one feels as good as it looks, as testers found it both lightweight and cosy.
