ITV’s Liar took an unexpected turn on Monday (25th September) when Andrew Earlham was revealed to be the person lying midway through series rather than at the end, as per what we usually see in ‘whodunnit’ style shows.

Up until that point, it was unclear as to the truth surrounding the alleged rape of Laura Nielson (Joanne Froggatt) by Andrew Earlham (Ioan Gruffud).

The show’s writers Jack and Harry Williams have revealed why they outed Andrew as having drugged and raped Laura – and lied about it to the police – with three episodes yet to come.

What to read next

‘You expect to find out at the end, so therefore I think it felt a bit like, “Ooh, what would happen if we pushed that earlier?”’ Harry said, according to Radio Times.

‘In The Missing, too, we revealed the killer halfway through and people were like, “Why have you done that? What are you going to do next?”’ he added, commenting that’s an ‘interesting’ way of approaching this sort of drama.

‘The worst thing you can do is say "Let’s wait until the end to reveal everything" and then spend two hours of the audience’s time going, “Um – what are we going to do now?”’ Jack added.

Now the audience knows the truth, the remaining episodes will likely explore whether Laura can convince the police and the people who know herself and Andrew of what really happened.

Liar continues on Monday 2nd October at 9pm on ITV.
