Camilla was at a meeting of Safe-Lives, a charity which protects victims of abuse, when she heard five women tell their stories of suffering.

The women included Rachel Williams, 43, who described how after 18 years of an abusive marriage she tried to leave her husband, prompting him to blast her with a shotgun at the hair salon where she worked.

Another speaker, Hetti Barkworth-Nanton, talked of her friend Joanna Brown, who was battered to death with a claw hammer by her estranged husband while her two young children cowered in the playroom.
The duchess, who has long campaigned on the issue of rape and sexual assault, pledged to help victims of abuse at the meeting.
She told attendees at the event in London: ‘It’s so important that people like yourselves speak up otherwise we gloss over it. And this is too important an issue to ignore.’
