Last night (1st October) saw the first episode of new BBC period drama The Last Post hit screens – and viewers took to social media to weigh in on the show.

The six-part drama, set in the swinging 60s, follows a unit of British Royal Military Police and their families in Aden (Yemen) and features a star-studded cast including Call the Midwife’s Jessica Raine and The Crown’s Ben Miles.

The show is based on the childhood memories of its writer Peter Moffat - his father's career as an officer and his mother's struggle between being what the army required her to be and what she felt like being.

Peter has described the show as portraying: ‘Men full of vim, vigor and a desire to be heroes in a situation where that isn't always possible; alongside young women who are starting to feel the emancipation of the Sixties and a sense of new freedoms but who are living in a constrained setting where their role is supposed to be merely supportive.

'This was my parents' world and one I have wanted to write about all my career,’ he added.

So what did the viewers make of episode one? Some thought the first episode was slow moving.

While others felt it wasn’t always factually accurate.
In general, though, the reviews seem pretty positive, with lots of viewers saying they’ll be tuning back in next week.
The Last Post continues on Sunday at 9pm on BBC One.
