Call the Midwife proved it’s far more than just cosy Sunday evening TV by scooping the first ever award for best period drama at the National Television Awards 2017.
The show, which centres around the lives on midwives in mid 20th-century Poplar, has been a massive hit for the BBC, and beat programmes such as Peaky Blinders, Victoria and Poldark to win the grand title.

The cast were clearly thrilled to pick up their award, although executive producer Pippa Harris used her acceptance speech as a chance to flag up the ongoing importance of Call the Midwife’s subject matter.
‘We focus particularly on women’s issues and stories, and on the battles that our mothers and grandmothers fought many years ago, and which I thought we had all won’ she said.
‘At a time when women’s issues are being marginalised, and ignored, it seems even more important to keep telling those stories.’
What a brilliant win, and strong message to send out - congratulations!
