In this modern day and age, we’ve become increasingly accustomed to animating our messages to friends and family with emojis. Nothing finishes off a, ‘Sorry I’m late!’ message like the ‘speak no evil’ monkey emoji, after all.
But there were a fair few gaping holes in our emoji repertoire that we really, really could have been doing with… Which is why we’re over the moon that Apple has finally released not one, but one hundred and eighty four new little animated friends in its newest operating system update.
Following the release of iOS9 back in September, the technology giant noticed several technical glitches, which led to some almost-immediate updates for the system. So now iOS9.1 has officially arrived, and we’re chuffed to see it has brought with it a cheese emoji (among others).

All you have to do to get your hands on these new little bundles of fun is to head to ‘Settings’ on your iPhone, clicking ‘General’ and then updating your operating system.
So what other emojis will be available with the new update?
Lots of food related ones:
This includes (but thankfully, is not limited to) a block of cheese, a bottle of champagne, tacos (naturally), popcorn, and more. So really, they’re summarising our food consumption on most days.
The middle finger:
This one is a little controversial, but what can we say: what the people want, the people get. And long has there been a demand for an emoji showing the ultimate sign of defiance by raising its middle finger at you in protest. Just remind your kids that they’ll be grounded if they ever dare message that one to you.
Pretty much all the animals in the kingdom:
Even the supernatural ones, like the unicorn. Which had been sorely missed for quite some time, might we add. Apple have also extended its animal range from a somewhat meagre farmyard into the entire animal kingdom; welcoming lions, turkeys, squirrels and more into the mix.
Faith symbols:
This one we can really get on board with. Anything from a mosque to a synagogue to prayer beads is now available on the latest emoji keyboard, and we’re loving the expression of equality and fairness that comes with them.
Very detailed travel emojis:
The only thinking we can imagine there was behind these three new plane emojis is the fact that, with improving technology and Wi-Fi now available mid-flight on some planes, the great iPhone-using public will want to inform their loved ones with a single symbol whether they are taking off, cruising, or landing at the point of conversation. And, well, these certainly do the job.
So there you have it: some (but certainly not all) of the new emojis that can now be at your fingertips. For a full list of what’s available, head over to Emojipedia, who really know their stuff.
We do, however, have one huge disappointment to report. For some ungodly reason, avocados did not make the cut and therefore will not be available for us to add to our Instagram pictures of avocado and poached eggs on toast until next year at the earliest. Come ON, Apple. Get with the system.
