The cast of Call the Midwife have congratulated their former co-star Emerald Fennell on her three Oscar nominations which were announced yesterday afternoon (March 15).

Fennell has been nominated for Best Director, Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay for her black comedy thriller Promising Young Woman, starring Carey Mulligan, who received a Best Actress nomination for her performance.

The 35-year-old London-born actress, writer and director had previously played Nurse Patsy Mount in the much-loved BBC period drama for four years between 2013 and 2017. Her character began a relationship with Kate Lamb's Delia Busby, before pair eventually left Poplar to go travelling together.

Helen George, who plays Nurse Trixie, praised Fennell for her incredible achievement on Twitter, writing: "So amazing, so proud, so deserved!!!"

Stephen McGann, who plays Doctor Patrick Turner in the drama, added: "The absolute genius on the right has just been nominated for THREE OSCARS! (the woman on the left is still working in rep I think...)Em, we're all rooting for you, you brilliant, brilliant thing! So many congratulations."

Fennell, who was the show-runner for season two of BBC One's award-winning Killing Eve, shared her emotional reaction to her Oscar nominations on Twitter, writing: "Sobbing."

The star later added: "So proud and grateful to every amazing person who worked on this film. Never going to stop crying."

Fennell also played Camilla Parker-Bowles in The Crown.

Other British stars announced as Oscar nominees included Riz Ahmed and Anthony Hopkins for Best Actor, Mulligan and Vanessa Kirby for Best Actress, Daniel Kaluuuya and Sacha Baron Cohen for Best Supporting Actor, and Olivia Colman for Best Supporting Actress.

The Oscars will take place on Sunday, April 25, with only presenters, nominees and their guests being able attend this year due to Covid restrictions.
