What to read next

To sell your item you need good pictures (natural light, blank background) and clear detail in the title (size, material, make and condition).

Setting a reserve limit will stop items going too cheaply but, be aware, it can put some buyers off.

Looking for a quick sale? Simply set a 'buy it now' price. Otherwise, list items for bids for one, three, five, seven or ten days.

Be canny. Sunday evenings are a busy time on eBay, so plan your sale period to finish then and you could be quids in.

Vestiaire Collective

Use it to sell designer wear, high-end vintage, as well as high street favourites such as Zara and Topshop. No fakes accepted - quality control is tight.

Vestiaire handles payment and delivery for you - and take 13% to 33% commission. You can get DHL to pick up items for a fee.

How it works: you set the price; after 24 hours buyers can make you an offer; you then have another 24 hours to accept, decline and maybe reduce your selling price.

Preloved

A cross between eBay and Gumtree, this site is perfect for trades between buyers and sellers in the same area. No postage costs!

Much simpler than eBay  - it only took a few clicks to list an item. However, the two designer men's jackets we posted still hadn't sold after a month.

MusicMagpie

Originally just CDs but now MusicMagpie sells other items. Don't expect to make much though: a pile of old jeans we sold on eBay for £42 would only fetch £13.12 here.

Verdict: Use eBay for speedy sales on clothes. Try Vestiaire for higher priced items and on trend fashions.
