The beauty of Bermuda

Coastal and oceanic landforms, Shore, Coast, Sand, Ocean, Beach, Tropics, Azure, Caribbean, Sea,
Forget this North Atlantic island's rather staid image. The honeymooners and cruise day-trippers may spend their days lazing on the sand, but there's so much more to Bermuda than beaches.

The Bermudian government has recently sunk $23.1m into tourism and there’s a wealth of new businesses launching, from Segway rides around the island to eco-tours, all aiming to help visitors make the most of Bermuda’s natural assets.

Here's GH's pick of Bermudian must-dos...

Hidden Gems eco-tours promise to reveal the island’s hidden secrets. Led by flora and fauna expert Ashley, tours take in Southlands, a vast estate filled with garden pools and the island's largest banyan grove, where we swung from vines and the island’s jungle, named after the Irish poet Tom Moore, who lived on the island.

The crystal caves

Stalagmite, Stalactite, Liquid, Freezing, Teal, Speleothem, Turquoise, Formation, Aqua, Geology,
Beneath Tom Moore’s Jungle lies a series of underground caves. In the dark, crystals sparkle and twinkle. Scrabble along slippery passageways and you’ll find yourself in a vast cavern over a lagoon. Swimming in the dark waters is an unforgettable experience – and if you’re feeling brave you can dive down and swim through an underwater tunnel into the sea on the other side.

Fish sandwiches and a dark and stormy

The fish sandwich is an Bermudian speciality. This feast of fresh snapper coated in a spicy batter inside a soft roll is best accompanied with the island’s national cocktail, the dark and stormy (rum and ginger beer). Art Mel’s Spicy Dicy, a no-frills diner in Hamilton, does the best.

Bermuda’s quiet roads and mile-long beaches are the ideal spot for a horseback ride. Spicelands Equestrian Centre run a tour along breezy forest paths (where you can spot redbirds, a species indigineous to the island) before a trot along the sand and into the sea for a refreshing dip.
