How did you get started as a writer?
My first novel, The Island, sprang from an unexpected moment of inspiration on a Greek island. I had been writing as a journalist before then, but on this occasion I knew that my imagination had to be allowed to take over. I was in my 40s.

What’s your writing routine?
I spend many months researching (usually in Greece) before I begin to write. I am very disciplined when it comes to the writing stage – I begin at 9.30 and carry on until 6, usually in the London Library.

Pen or computer?
First notes and outlines are done in pencil (plastic propelling pencils from Rymans) and then the rest on a MacAir.

What to read next

Do you have any superstitions or lucky charms to help you write?
The final number of chapters or pages has to be divisible by three – as this is my lucky number.

Do you find writing easy?
Some days yes, some days no.

How do you celebrate when you’ve finished a book?
I always cry with relief – but also with sadness, because I am saying goodbye to my characters.

Who are your favourite authors?
Ian McEwan, Anne Tyler and Javier Marias.
