Netflix has released an image of Florence Pugh in The Wonder, an adaptation of the best-selling novel of the same title by Emma Donoghue.
Set in Ireland in the Midlands in 1862, the eerie story follows a young English nurse (Florence) who arrives in an impoverished Ireland village to observe an 11-year-old girl named Anna, who claims to have eaten nothing for months, but appears to be thriving miraculously.
Emma Donoghue, whose novel Room was adapted into an Oscar-winning film starring Brie Larson, will write the screenplay with Alice Birch and director Sebastián Lelio.
What to read next
Chilean filmmaker Lelio said: "Bringing the powerful novel The Wonder by Emma Donoghue to the screen not only offers me the chance to portray the collision between reason and faith, individual and community, obedience and rebellion, but also to explore my own interpretation of what a "period" film can be. I couldn't be more thrilled that the magnetic and courageous Florence Pugh will play our fierce female lead.
"I am also excited to be reunited with Ed Guiney and Element, to have the privilege to work with Tessa Ross and House, and honored that Netflix have chosen The Wonder as their first UK Features endeavour."
Filming is currently underway in Ireland.
Here's everything else we know about The Wonder so far...
The plot
The Wonder centres on a young, well-educated nurse (played by Florence Pugh) called Lib Wright who is summoned to a tiny, deprived Irish village to observe eleven-year old Anna O'Donnell. Tourists and pilgrims mass to witness the girl who is said to have survived without food for months. Is the village harbouring a saint 'surviving on manna from heaven' or are there more ominous motives at work?
Lib is on mission to expose what she believes to be a hoax, but as she develops a close bond to the child, she becomes more and more unsure.
The gothic, psychological thriller is inspired by the 19th century phenomenon of the "fasting girls".
The cast
Joining Black Widow's Florence Pugh is The Virtues actress Niamh Algar and Detectorists actor Toby Jones.
Tom Burke, Elaine Cassidy, Kíla Lord Cassidy, Dermot Crowley, Brían F. O'Byrne, David Wilmot and Ciaran Hinds complete the cast.
Acclaimed Chilean filmmaker Sebastián Lelio, whose 2017 feature A Fantastic Woman won an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, will direct.
The release date
The Wonder has just started filming in Ireland, so we can probably expect the drama to arrive some time in 2022.
The Wonder will launch on Netflix.
