The nights are drawing in and the morning air feels crisper already. It’s time to start thinking about snuggling up in woolly jumpers and planning nights in rather than evenings out. To prepare you for the upcoming chillier weather, we’ve pulled together some tips on creating a comfy bedding scheme that will see you through the season in style.
First things first: your thin summer duvet won’t be substantial enough to keep the chill out, so invest in a heavier one. Heal’s home buyer Hannah Edwards recommends a nine to 10.5 tog rating. “These offer more warmth than lighter versions while reducing overheating,” she says. “They’re also particularly good for those who share a bed as they offer the perfect balance of temperature preference for both users.”
A thick mattress topper or electric blanket will also increase your bed’s cosiness factor.

Experiment with colours and prints
When it comes to colour, the autumn season is the time to move away from pastel tones and work some warmer, deeper shades into your home’s scheme. “Look for rich mustards, fir greens and deep rust tones,” says Hannah. “You can enhance the scheme’s overall look by putting these against dark oaks and polished brass finishes.”
Don’t be afraid to mix and match either. Plain linens looks great when paired with a bold graphic print – like on a cushion or throw, for example – to add a splash of personality. A chunky textured blanket across the bottom of the bed also helps to create a relaxed and inviting feel.
Remember, though, that whether you choose to blend a variety of hues together or experiment with pattern, it’s important to stick to a warm colour palette to create a consistent look.

Mix fabrics and textures
If your bed is currently only adorned with a simple duvet set, give it an instant upgrade by adding a throw and some cushions. This will quickly create a cosy atmosphere that’s perfect for curling up in as the nights get cooler.
Linen sheets are soft and breathable and offer a subtle crinkled appearance that creates a relaxed vibe. Add extra depth by layering fabrics; Hannah recommends using a faux fur throw, either alone or mixed with a simple blanket.
