Do you have the right helmet?

All helmets sold in the UK comply with safety standards. Look for one that adjusts easily and has vents for summer wearing.  It should fit you flat across the forehead and finish about 1cm above the brow. It shouldn't move when you shake your head from side to side, and if you can put more than a finger beneath the chin strap when secured, it's too loose.

Is your bike roadworthy?

Once a month, make sure you oil the bike chain, check to see the saddle is secure and inspect the brake pads - if they squeal, they may be worn and need replacing. Bike shops such as Evans and Halfords also offer comprehensive annual servicing from approximately £20 up to £140.

Is the family road aware?

Free cycle training is available for children through some schools or local schemes. If you're having trouble finding a course, ask your local authority or call the national cycling charity's (CTC) helpline on 0844 736 8460. Some authorities offer free adult training schemes, too - otherwise you can expect to pay between £10 and £15 an hour.

Know where you're going?

Plan your route. The National Trust and CTC have plenty of ideas for scenic cycle routes, some more challenging trails and bike trips that would be perfect for the whole family.

Get covered

Most home insurers include bike theft cover as standard, as long as you keep your bikes in a locked shed or garage. But don't assume this is always the case. To be covered away from home - both third party liability and theft - you would need to pay extra. To get something more tailored to your needs, consider standalone cycle insurance from specialist insurers and cycle shops - cycleinsurance.co.uk is a useful comparison website.
