Sorry to my corduroy trousers - this silky style from Boden has just redefined my wardrobe

Velvet is having a revival, and no, it's not just for party season.

By

For 2025, velvet has undergone a rebrand. So, if you thought the fabric was strictly reserved for partywear, it’s time to think again.

As proven by Giorgio Armani’s A/W 25 runway earlier this year, the sumptuously soft fabric has begun to trickle into our everyday wardrobes, offering an easy way to add a touch of luxury to your autumn outfits. But, we here at Good Housekeeping know that not all of us have designer money, and so we made it our mission to find the best velvet trousers on the high street. The best pair we could find? The Canonbury Velvet Trousers, unsurprisingly from Boden.

Designed with comfort in mind, the silky trousers come cut to perfection, made with a slight stretch in the waistband for a flattering fit. Available in three rich shades, they come in a forest fir green, a delicious, dark cherry, and of course, a classic, sleek black.

As for styling, it couldn't be easier. Boden’s trousers pair excellently with a monochromatic cardigan (perfect for the office), or alternatively, paired with a lacy, silk cami and a matching velvet blazer for evenings out. But, Boden isn't the only brand to catch on, and there are plenty of other affordable options to consider in every shape and colour.

If a tighter fit isn’t your style, and you prefer something a little more relaxed, Nobody’s Child have you covered. Their burgundy, wide leg design offers a more slouchy silhouette, while the tailored waist keeps you looking equally as polished. Meanwhile, for something a touch of boho charm, Free People's slim, flared design is finished with a textured chevron effect that rivals the ribbed appeal of corduroy. The ‘eventide’ blue shade could easily be mistaken for denim from afar, making it a playful alternative to your everyday jeans.

If, like me, you’re all about fun details that spark conversation, you’re in for a treat. Anthropologie’s velvet crop trousers feature a playful ruffled hem, for a feminine twist, while Monsoon have taken it a step further, adorning their slouchy pair with clusters of gold beads for a little extra sparkle.

Trust us, once you slip a pair on, you’ll wonder why you ever waited for party season to embrace velvet.
