These bold shirts will make your wardrobe pop - and pair perfectly with power suits

Bold hues are great for autumn, too

By

Picture this: we’re back in March, and Cate Blanchett has stepped out wearing a visually juxtaposing look for Tom Ford’s autumn/winter 2025 show. The bold look in question? A bright green neck tie shirt paired with a laid back, dusty pink power suit and sleek black kitten heels.

Now, you may be wondering why I’m telling you this, but it’s because I believe a bright shirt might just be the key to upgrading your favourite tailoring sets. Unlike your plain white shirt, a bold colour adds a fresh twist to your outfit formula, transforming an otherwise understated and traditional ensemble.

Of course, you wouldn’t be wrong to assume that Blanchett’s look only worked because it was the start of spring, when bright hues are celebrated and encouraged. But, in what can be considered a pleasant surprise, bold coloured shirts can breathe life into your blazer-and-trouser sets not just in spring, but also through the muted, moody months of autumn.

My favourite style has to be bold blues, with Whistles taking the lead, followed closely by Topshop. Fashion people have proven that blue in general is trending this season, and plenty of well dressed women have been pairing the sea inspired colour with chocolate brown, burgundy and khaki hues. So, if you own a suit in one of these autumnal colours, it might be time to consider adding this maritime shade to your outfit formula.

Bold red is another striking option, adding a fiery touch to your tailored look. This isn’t surprising, given the popularity of the ‘tomato girl’ trend over summer. Similarly, orange offers a softer take on the bright shade, and there’s no shortage of options: but Omnes’ version really stands out to us here as one of the most flattering versions.

Bold colours don’t have to be solid either, and patterns can make a statement without feeling too busy. With Nothing Underneath offers a candy stripe red and white shirt, while Reformation’s comes in pink and dusty rose with an asymmetric pocket print for a cool, contemporary touch.
