To sleeve to or not to sleeve - this is the cosy knitwear staple that will transform your wardrobe
Starting from £28
If there’s one thing 2025 has taught us, it’s that sportswear is in. Yes, you heard right, sport has eventually turned stylish, and the clothing once reserved for rugby players and golf enthusiasts has become rather mainstream. First, we saw striped rugby tops take the main stage in bold reds, blues and greens. For this season, argyle knits, known synonymously for teeing off, have stolen the spotlight, offering crisscross patterns in a blend of colours. Now, we’re seeing the resurgence of yet another golf staple: the sweater vest.
While the original appeal of the sweater vest first came down to its practical ability to provide core warmth without restricting arm movement (hello, armholes), it didn’t mean the knit hero lacked style appeal, sharing the same diamond-shaped patterns of the argyle sweater. This season, however, the armless sweater vest has had a sartorial upgrade of sorts, and now comes in bright colours and bold patterns.
Omnes’ striped version is an excellent example, blending Parisian inspired classic stripes with bold red and magenta pink hues. Constructed from eco-conscious cotton, this frivolous sweater vest looks brilliant layered over your favourite boxy white tee, paired with a tailored pair of black trousers and some pink Alohas. Similarly, Oliver Bonas’ radish knitted tank top comes in burgundy and features contrasting fuchsia pink trims for a touch of femininity.
Cable knit versions also prove incredibly popular, truly tapping into the staples golfing roots. M&S stocks an excellent bright green version made from Air Yarn for a hint of stretch, a brilliant, breathable material that offers added comfort when layering other staples underneath. Alternatively, Maeve – Anthropologie’s own brand – has a Parisian chic version with ‘Rive Seine’ featured across the front in a cream shade. My opinion? It’ll look great paired with a striped shirt for a touch of boyish charm.
As for something a little less traditional in shape, opt for Albaray’s knitted tabbard that comes with tie-waist detailing, which is a great addition for two reasons: it’s incredibly easy to pair with other pieces and offers added customisation. Likewise, & Other Stories’ wool bib collar comes in a striking red hue (a colour that’s trending, by the way) and features a high neckline for added cosiness once the weather seriously plummets.
