Yes, thermals can be flattering and functional - and the high street stocks some of the best
Say goodbye to boring layers this autumn.
In fashion terms, thermal clothing can be considered a faux pas. Typically unflattering and with its sole function being to protect a wearer from the cold, you’d think it would be impossible to find a warm staple that actually looks good. But with the weather forecast predicting temperatures will soon plummet, I made it my mission to find thermal layers that still look stylish, and to my surprise, the high street has them in spades.
But what makes these thermal pieces so flattering? Well, the main reason is that they can be effortlessly integrated into your regular outfit rotation, paired easily with plenty of hero pieces you already own. They’re not as bulky as some of the other options available, and they’re made with flexible fabric – sometimes referred to as ‘second-skin’ – which makes them especially comfortable to wear and will earn you plenty of ‘where did you get that from?’ compliments.
M&S’ range of thermal wear is especially impressive, offering plenty of thermal tops that flatter and work with a range of jumpers and coats. The highlight? The Heatgen™ Medium Thermal Scoop Neck Top, which comes with a gently brushed inside, offering optimal insulation while remaining soft to the touch against the skin. The top comes in four stylish colours, including a cosy cream, blackberry, navy, and classic black.
Alternatively, for a sultry touch, John Lewis and Next stock lace detailed thermal tops in fig and white: pieces that would look great underneath grey fluffy cardigans. Free People, on the other hand, offer plenty of adorable patterned numbers – our favourite being the Pretty Little Thermal Top which comes in nine stylish prints. Our favourite has to be the floral version with cosy cuff sleeve detailing.
I was also especially pleased to find that there were stylish jeans with functional heat-trapping qualities (yes, you read that right), led by a pair from Calzedonia. The cigarette-style jean looks seriously chic and comes in black, too. I also came across a plethora of thermal leggings, but H&M’s version stood out the most to me, coming in at a generous £19.99.
Turns out, thermal wear isn’t just for practical pursuits, after all.
