Chic tailoring has just had a modern upgrade – and all the best pieces come from the high street
Sophisticated staples don't need to come with a Savile Row price tag
Grey tailoring is having an in right now. For spring earlier this year, grey suiting proved popular among well-dressed women in plenty of monochrome shades, with lighter versions in particular bringing a touch of ease and freshness to formal tailoring, breathing new life into a wardrobe hero.
As for autumn, the trend shows no sign of slowing down, and continues to be reinvented with a more modern approach. In Paris earlier this year, Tom Ford’s newest creative director, Haider Ackermann, championed grey tailoring for the A/W 25 ready-to-wear collection. However, you don’t need to spend a fortune to nail the boyish yet sophisticated style, as it’s easily achieved on a budget, thanks to the high street.
When you think of tailoring, we’d assume blazers instantly come to mind: double-breasted, in chalk grey and sooty charcoal. Naturally, we think the same. We found some of the best grey blazers out there, with our favourite contemporary version coming from H&M, thanks to its collarless detailing that strays from the typical styles. Another standout comes from & Other Stories, which has a thin tie belt that nods to some designer favourites.
A pair of classic trousers is non-negotiable when it comes to tailored staples, complete with belt loops and neat hook bars for a sense of put-togetherness. Our GH approved pair comes from Marks & Spencer, which is no surprise, given the brand’s reputation for timeless pieces that won’t dent your bank account. Alternatively, Boden offers an equally stylish pair with high-waisted detailing, that would work well with their selection of Fair Isle jumpers as part of their Highland Fling collection.
Shirts are next, bringing flattering Oxford-style fits for boyish charm with a feminine edge à la the Princess of Wales. Pinstriped choices work brilliantly – the Aligne Aubrey pinstriped trouser set comes with a slightly sultry, cinched shirt – while Massimo Dutti offers a satin option for a softer finish.
And in recent years, tailored skirts have stepped into the spotlight. We love one style from H&M that’s classic, straight-fit and perfect for a more formal approach. Equally, Sézane’s A-line Clarine Skirt combines easy wearability with office polish.
