A swishy ballet skirt is the essential style upgrade of the season – led by one high street standout
The French trend continues to reign supreme
This year has been a real winner for ballet core. First, ballet flats skyrocketed in popularity, featuring dainty bow detailing as well as studded accents for a grungier edge. Then, wrap-style tops and cardigans – reminiscent of those layered over leotards for added warmth – made waves. But there’s one swishy staple that has begun to dominate wardrobes everywhere, and that is the ballet skirt, otherwise known as the tulle skirt.
But the style hasn’t just become an overnight sensation. Plenty of notable people have already worn the joyful ballet staple, including Pamela Anderson (who could forget her stylish Dior ensemble?) and the Princess of Wales (another Dior look) during the French state visit back in July this year. Unfortunately, we may not have designer money, but here at GH we believe there’s an excellent alternative out there to shop, courtesy of Boden.
The Anna Tulle Midi Skirt from Boden is the ultimate ballerina skirt you need for the season, designed with swishiness in mind. Constructed from layered tulle, the skirt features adorable polka dot detailing for an added touch of femininity on a tiered silhouette. It comes in three different colours: a dark navy, a bright pink (now with more than 50% off), and a bold leopard print pattern, perfect if you’re looking for something different.
Other highlights we found include the Hush Millie Tulle Maxi, which comes in a slate grey and looks excellent worn as a pared-back staple with a pair of brown trainers and a brown blouse for added colour coordination. Alternatively, Phase Eight stocks an especially whimsical white version, similar to Apricot’s version, which comes covered in sequins.
For something that leans more Parisian, opt for Anthropologie’s Ruffled Tulle Midi, appropriately named The Chéri. River Island offers a similar style in brown, which, much like the spotlighted Boden skirt, comes with tiered detailing.
The best part about the ballerina skirt is that it’s incredibly versatile to style. For off-duty, pair with flats and a casual mohair-style jumper. For dressier occasions, choose a white vest top or boxy tee (if you’d prefer more coverage) and add a stylish pair of boots, or go all out and wear your favourite pair of comfortable heels.
