Louche, relaxed, chic – how to wear satin midi skirts now
Oh, and they’re as easy to style as jeans.
Have you ever marvelled at the staying power of the bias-cut satin slip skirt? I have. Decade after decade, this silken wisp of a skirt slides back into rotation, looking as modern as it did in the 1990s, when Kate Moss made it her own and everyone owned a bias-cut version by Ghost.
There’s only a handful of other modern style staples that can claim this level of consistent relevance – a white-shirt, Levi’s 501s, a bomber jacket, a straight black trouser and a biker jacket make the cut. The bias-cut satin skirt also belongs in this list, and yet, curiously, it’s something I often overlook when getting dressed, thinking mine (in champagne-coloured silk from & Other Stories circa 2019) is too fussy and hard to style.
But when I think about it for more than a minute, this conundrum disappears. I’d even go so far as to say a bias-cut satin skirt is as easy to wear as a pair of jeans. It’s often an easy pull-on piece, flatters and skims the body and can be styled with the same items as you would a pair of jeans: a white shirt, a classic T-shirt, a sleeveless knit, a silk tank or a tailored jacket.
This is the very stuff of modern everyday style – all that changes with time are proportions, shoes and colours. For 2025, the best skirts are relaxed, slouchy, minimal, with a leaning to pale colours, lace trims and sheer panels. For your satin midi to work best for now, simply wear with a white T-shirt or soft white shirt, throw on a tailored jacket and some flat or platform sandals - even a loafer works! - and relax into it. This is dressed-up style worn with an air of casual elegance, making it modern and cool all at once. And guess what? Ghost still does one of the best bias-cut satin midis out there.
