You might have recently heard the phrase ‘wearing vs styling,’ which refers to the idea that styling goes a step beyond simply wearing clothes. In fact, it’s about how you layer, drape and accessorise to make an outfit stand out, and I’ve noticed fashion fans leaning on one particular trend to turn simple outfits into something rather spectacular.
Surprisingly, the hack comes courtesy of a jumper, but not in the way you’d usually expect. Well-dressed women have started to style (remember, not wear) their jumpers for a polished touch and I first noticed it earlier this year. The trick? Draping your favourite jumper over your shoulders on top of jackets and trench coats for an effortless, preppy vibe.
The look works for a few reasons: it’s simple to pull off, costs almost nothing, and I can guarantee you already have plenty of jumpers in your wardrobe to experiment with.

You can also tie the sleeves at the front for a fun, golf style, or knot them for a boyish, school tie effect. Since then, I’ve happily adopted the style myself and I believe you will, too.
For autumn, the jumper style has gone a step further and now comes with a belt inspired twist. Street stylers are now wearing jumpers around their hips, almost like a sporty, throw on accessory. The best part? It’s an easy way to inject a touch of vintage athletic style into any outfit.
To make matters easy, we’ve rounded up some of the best jumpers to style for the foreseeable future. Marks & Spencer, of course, offers a classic beige staple with a subtle turtle neck that’ll serve its traditional purpose and beyond: same with Whistles’ red crop crew jumper made with cosy cashmere.
Patterned versions are also great if you want to add a touch of contrast to your outfit. Aligne has a knitted polo top that doubles up as a sweater, however you could also opt for Jigsaw’s Cloud Cashmere Eldon jumper which features charming stripes.
