When Princess Elizabeth married the Duke of Edinburgh in 1947, she had to buy the material using ration coupons. The dress was created by Norman Hartnell, one of the court's favourite designers, and featured a star-patterned 13-foot bridal train, symbolic of rebirth and growth after the war. It is said to have been inspired by Botticelli's Primavera painting.

Jackie O, demonstrated her impeccable style in a gorgeous silk chiffon taffeta gown created by Ann Lowe.
Although her wedding to John F. Kennedy was the event of the season, it was almost ruined when the dress was destroyed in a flood 10 days before. Luckily, Ann Lowe and her team recreated it in the nick of time after working day and night non-stop - no mean feat when you know the original took two months to make!

In 1956, Grace Kelly looked every inch the princess when she married Prince Rainier III of Monaco. The gown featured a bodice and two petticoats, and was covered in lace and pearls. It was also created by MGM's costume designer Helen Rose. The actress carried a pearl-encrusted prayer book down the aisle.
