The dress was created by Norman Hartnell, one of the court's favourite designers, and featured a star-patterned 13-foot bridal train, symbolic of rebirth and growth after the war. It is said to have been inspired by Botticelli's Primavera painting.

Although her wedding to John F. Kennedy was the event of the season, it was almost ruined when the dress was destroyed in a flood 10 days before. Luckily, Ann Lowe and her team recreated it in the nick of time after working day and night non-stop - no mean feat when you know the original took two months to make!
