If you're a keen photographer, you may own - or you may be thinking about buying - a DSLR (digital single-lens reflex) camera.

Using a DSLR, you can take much better quality photos than you can using a compact digital camera. The downside is that DSLRs tend to be a lot heavier and bulkier - and that's not ideal when you're taking snaps while you're out and about. Now, compact system cameras (also known as mirrorless cameras) offer a smaller, lighter alternative to DSLRs but with the same great image quality and the ability to use interchangeable lenses to achieve a range of different effects.

Canon claims its newest mirrorless camera - the EOS R - can take very good low light photos, so we were excited to trial it when one arrived in the Good Housekeeping Institute.

Slim and sturdy
The EOS R is comfortable to hold and, with a large hand grip moulded into the body of the camera, there’s no fear of dropping it or fumbling as you hold the camera steady to take a shot. It’s lightweight, too, but still feels well-built.

A delight in low light
We were very impressed with the performance of the EOS R in low light conditions. Even in dim lighting, the photos we took looked sharp and full of detail with a good range of colours captured. The camera also has a silent shooting mode that is great for photographing wildlife and it can even shoot video in high definition 4K format - you will really notice the difference in the vibrancy of the colours in the footage you record.

Verdict
The performance and features of the EOS R make it a standout camrea. But with an eye-watering price tag, this is a camera for those for whom photography is a real passion.

The Canon EOS R is priced at £2,349.99 for the body only and £3,269.99 with a 24-105mm Lens. It’s available from October 2018.
