1. Avoid heat.
Aside from general use, heat is probably the biggest killer of batteries. It’s also the easiest to avoid.

2. Avoid charging all the way up, or discharging all the way down.
Lithium-ion batteries like the one in your phone really don’t like to be charged from zero to 100%, or discharged from 100% to zero. Lithium-ion batteries won’t succumb to the ‘memory effect and calibrating them is questionably useful. Charge your battery a little bit whenever you can and plug it in when you’re not using it. Always err on the side of keeping it charged in fits and starts over one long charge and then one long discharge.

There are plenty of other measures you can take if you’re really concerned, but these two will give you the greatest benefit for the least amount of trouble. Batteries can be a fickle thing, but if you follow these two simple guidelines, you can rest assured you’ve got the basics right.
