While Sactionals are expensive and some users found the sofas difficult to assemble, reviewers love that the couches are comfortable and easy to clean (the covers are machine-washable). "It's expensive, but so worth it," writes one reviewer.

Online shopping experience isn't seamless
If you're looking for sofas with built-in recliners, look no further than La-Z-Boy. As the name suggests, the brand is focused on creating sofas where you can be "lazy" — a.k.a. kick up your feet up and relax. While there are options without reclining seats, the brand stands out for its recliner chairs and sofas.
We surveyed over 350 La-Z Boy sofa owners, who gave the brand high ratings, especially for comfort and appearance. One writes, "I have a bad back and the support of this sofa is amazing." Many also mention the couches are easy to clean and that they appreciate the unique features, like built-in chargers and removable cushions.
The only downside? The site doesn't offer as seamless of a shopping experience as other online retailers — it's more difficult to locate dimensions and choose a fabric. But, at least there's the option to shop in store.

Not only is the modular design simple enough to assemble yourself, but it allows users to rearrange the pieces as needed — like moving the chaise from one side to another the next time you move. Some users reported that the couches are smaller than expected so take note of the measurements.
The "Nomad" is the brand's most popular collection, which starts at $1,599 and allows you to choose your favorite arm style, cushion style, leg finish, material and fabric color. Luckily, the website offers a straightforward, friction-free online ordering process.

How we choose the best places to buy a couch

Over the years, our scientists and engineers at Good Housekeeping Institute's Textile Lab have researched sofas from more than 50 stores and brands, plus surveyed thousands of sofa owners to receive their in-depth feedback on the couches they own. Users provided detailed information on everything from the online ordering process, delivery and assembly to comfort, appearance and durability over time. Our product experts tried out a few of the brands, like Crate & Barrel and Burrow, many of which have earned a title as one of the best sofas, best sectionals or the most comfortable couches.
What to look for when shopping for a couch

✔️ Type of sofa: It's important to consider the size of your space, plus the size of your family. Standard sofas, ideal for three or four people, are generally between 72 and 85 inches long. Love seats, usually around 48 to 70 inches long, are best for two people (like couples) and ideal for small spaces. Sectional sofas — typically U- or L-shaped — include extra pieces that can be arranged to create a leg rest. Other popular types include modular sofas (adjustable sofas comprised of individual pieces), sleeper sofas (include a pull-out mattress or can be reconfigured into a bed) and reclining sofas.
✔️ Features: On top of cushioning, materials and frames, some brands are well-known for providing unique features, like reclining seats, built-in storage, USB ports or sleeper sofas.
✔️ Upholstery material: Most likely, you'll want to select a fabric based on your personal preference. Leather sofas, which exude a luxe look, tend to be more expensive and harder to clean. Meanwhile, polyester fabrics tend to be easier to clean and maintain, making them a great choice for families with kids or pets. Natural fibers, like cotton or linen, look beautiful but typically don't hold up as well to stains, so they are better suited for sitting rooms or spaces that aren't used every day.
✔️ Price: Consider whether you'd like a comfortable couch that will last for years or if you prefer an inexpensive option that may need replacing, sometimes within in a year or two. You can find cheap couches under $300, but they won't provide the quality or durability of more expensive sofas. A number of quality retailers make it possible to find a great sofa under $1,000, but if you're searching for a large couch or sectional made from quality materials, you're likely looking at a few thousand dollars.
✔️ Shipping: If you need a couch ASAP, you'll want to pay attention to in-stock options — out-of-stock and made-to-order couches can take weeks, or even months, to ship. Retailers, like Amazon, Wayfair and IKEA, prioritize fast delivery, shipping some styles within a week. Other brands, like Pottery Barn and Crate & Barrel, focus on customizable couches that are worth the weeks-long wait.
✔️ Return policy: Most sofa brands offer at least a 30-day return and exchange policy (although not all), but you may be subject to restocking fees, shipping fees and/or packaging fees. Additionally, most made-to-order sofas are final sale.
