According to laundry lore, engineer Conrad Gaiser invented the dryer sheet in the 1960s so his wife, Audrey, could stop rushing from their top-floor apartment to the basement to add fabric softener on time. Conrad put liquid softener on flannel pieces to rock and roll in the dryer, which led to his patent for thin, coated dryer sheets. Audrey, and the rest of us, could relax a little.

These little wonders help prevent static cling and wrinkling and deliver softness, fluffiness and a pleasant scent (or not). Now the market is plump with brands in many scents, plus fragrance-free versions and options for targeted tasks (pet hair, anyone?). And considering all the other products you need — or want — for doing laundry, from detergents to liquid softeners to scent beads and more, it can be hard to figure out what’s best to use or buy. Here are the top dryer sheets we recommend.

Our top picks:

At the Good Housekeeping Institute, we test dozens of new laundry products each year, from smart washing machines and dryers to detergents, fabric softeners and dryer balls. Our Cleaning Lab pros have decades of collective testing experience, all tuned to finding what works best in real life for you. Read on at the end of this article to learn whether dryer sheets are worth buying, if dryer balls can replace them and more.

BEST OVERALL DRYER SHEETS

Bounce Outdoor Fresh Dryer Sheets

Pros

  • Tried-and-true classic since the 1970s
  • Leaves clothes pleasantly scented
  • Items are noticeably softer

Cons

  • Slightly smaller than some other brands
  • Manufacturer recommends using two per medium washload

Bounce has been around for 51 years, and it's always a top performer in GH Cleaning Lab tests. It's the standard against which we measure other dryer sheet brands. These leave items lightly softened, scented and static-free. Bounce leads our list of the best lightweight alternatives to a heavy bottle of fabric softener, especially if you have to carry your washing to a laundromat. Just slip one or two sheets into the dryer while the clothes tumble. The sheets are slightly smaller than some other brands, and Bounce recommends two per medium load for best results.

These longstanding faves gave us excellent results, working to help minimize wrinkles and static but also adding a clean scent — something you get when line-drying laundry in fresh air. If you prefer a fragrance-free option, the brand also offers a Free & Gentle formulation.

BEST VALUE DRYER SHEETS

Downy April Fresh Dryer Sheets

April Fresh Dryer Sheets

Pros

  • Affordable price
  • Beloved signature scent

Cons

  • Manufacturer suggests using two sheets for medium laundry load

This budget-friendly pick is widely available at just about any grocery store. The sheets measure a bit smaller than some competitors, so the Downy scent may not be quite as noticeable, but these still offer great performance at a great price. You spend less, yet get that signature fresh floral scent on fluffy, clean clothes.

You might need to double up. The company recommends using two sheets for medium loads and three for large loads. While that's up to you, take it into account because you will go through a box much faster that way.

BEST DRYER SHEETS TO FIGHT WRINKLES

Downy WrinkleGuard Mega Dryer Sheets

WrinkleGuard Mega Dryer Sheets
Credit: DOWNY

Pros

  • A bigger dryer sheet surface means more dewrinkling and softening ingredients
  • Fresh scent
  • Helps cut back on ironing and steaming clothes

Cons

  • Downy recommends using two mega sheets per medium wash load
  • Pricey, at 27 cents per sheet

Downy WrinkleGuard Sheets contain triple the crease-relaxing ingredients as the brand's regular dryer sheets to help stop wrinkles from forming in the first place. They fight that rumpled look wanted by no one.

These are a good fit for wash-and-wear tailored shirts (still, hang them right after drying). And we noted great performance and a pleasant scent when adding one mega sheet to the dryer with bedsheets. The bed linens came out softer and less wrinkled than when tumbled with an ordinary dryer sheet. Sateen bedsheets are notorious for wrinkling, but with one of these, they were noticeably smoother, a bonus for folding and bed-making.

While they won't entirely eliminate the need to steam or iron clothes, this product does minimize wrinkling to help make those tasks quicker and easier. The WrinkleGuard formula can even help keep clothing less wrinkled during wear.

BEST DRYER SHEETS FOR PET HAIR

Bounce Pet Hair & Lint Guard Mega Dryer Sheets

Pet Hair & Lint Guard Mega Dryer Sheets

Pros

  • Almost fully removed pet hair in our test
  • Softens well too
  • We found using half a sheet was effective

Cons

  • Mega size may be too large for small loads

In our recent Lab test of four products made specifically for removing pet hair from laundry, no other contender surpassed this one. We coated a fluffy sweater with a big handful of faux pet hair and washed it on regular cycle, then placed the sweater in the dryer with half of one of these mega sheets for a 20-minute cycle. When we removed the sweater, it was nearly free from pet hair.

Tackling pet hair is this product's strong suit, but our tests proved it does a great job softening fabric at the same time. Like all dryer sheets, they can only be used once, but you can extend their lifespan by repurposing them to wipe dust from baseboards, furniture and even computer screens. We found a dryer sheet swipe on an iPhone screen removed makeup, oil and sweat.

BEST DRYER SHEETS FOR ACTIVEWEAR

Hex Performance Wet Dryer Sheets

Wet Dryer Sheets
Credit: HEX PERFORMANCE

Pros

  • Helps keep workout wear fitting well and wicking perspiration
  • Tackles odors
  • Can be used when liquid fabric softener is not recommended

Cons

  • Package must be tightly closed, or the wet sheets can dry out

Though you generally shouldn't use fabric softener on items like towels and workout apparel, this modern dryer sheet formula is an exception. It's specially designed to prevent buildup while maintaining the fabric's absorbency and moisture-wicking properties.

Dryer sheets are typically treated with ingredients including fatty acids, which melt when heated to soften clothing. But that process can clog some fabrics, most commonly activewear, causing a loss of elasticity and breathability. Your pricey yoga and running clothes can take a hit.

Our test laundry came out of the dryer soft and static-free. No annoying "coated" feeling. Hex wet dryer sheets are an innovative alternative to traditional brands and the laundry detergent worked well in our tests, too. The brand has a big sports following, having been featured in Runner's World and selling out on the Dick's Sporting Goods website.

Though it does have a subtle "Fresh & Clean" scent, Hex is made with sensitive skin in mind — no heavy fragrances or irritants.

BEST-SMELLING DRYER SHEETS

Mrs. Meyer's Clean Day Dryer Sheets

Dryer Sheets
Credit: MRS. MEYER'S

Pros

  • Large selection of unique fragrances
  • Made with plant-derived softening agents

Cons

  • Some scents may be too strong, depending on personal preference
  • Expensive, at 21 cents per sheet

We have tested many Mrs. Meyer’s products, including dishwashing liquid and detergent, fragranced hand soaps and multi-purpose cleaners. They perform well and the scents are amazing, so we're comfortable recommending these dryer sheets. This brand is known for its wide range of garden-inspired fragrances like basil and lemon verbena, but you will pay more — 21 cents per sheet — to get that handpicked scent.

The paper sheets, made from plant-derived fibers and essential oils, help soften fabrics and reduce static. You can even extend your chosen laundry scent throughout your home with Mrs. Meyer's extensive line of cleaning products and soy candles. One consumer reviewer said, "The Honeysuckle is my favorite year-round scent, fresh but not overpowering." On the other hand, one GH home tester found the Lavender "way too strong" in her laundry room, so you may want to check reviews before you commit.

BEST NATURAL DRYER SHEETS

Beyond Fabric Softener Sheets

Fabric Softener Sheets

Pros

  • 2023 Best Cleaning & Organizing Award winner
  • Made with plant-based ingredients
  • Lavender scent is not overly perfumed

Cons

  • Cost is 10 cents per sheet, 4 cents more than our top pick

A winner of a 2023 Good Housekeeping Best Cleaning & Organizing Award, these Beyond dryer sheets offer a more natural alternative to conventional brands on the market. The product is a 99% USDA Certified Biobased Product, which means it's recognized as almost fully derived from renewable materials, like plants.

The non-woven sheet is made from renewable fibers and plant-based softening agents. Both our Lab and consumer testers liked Beyond. They noted softening and static control without waxy residue. “I liked the long-lasting, natural scent," a tester told us. "It leaves clothes smelling very clean and fresh, but without the perfume-y smell that I am so accustomed to with typical dryer sheets.”

BEST DRYER SHEETS FOR SENSITIVE SKIN

Seventh Generation Fabric Softener Sheets

Fabric Softener Sheets

Pros

  • EPA Safer Choice Certified
  • Dermatologist tested

Cons

  • Some sensitive users said they detected a scent

Seventh Generation is well-known for its USDA Certified Biobased Product status, and 97% of this dryer sheet's ingredients come from renewable sources. And since the product is completely dye- and fragrance-free, it's a great pick for those with sensitive skin or allergies.

But do they work? Yes, a home tester said. She found that the dryer sheets left fabrics lightly softened and static-free. The company makes laundry products in several fragrances, but we chose this unscented one for kids and adults with allergies and/or sensitive skin, as scented dryer sheets can be irritants. Still, some consumer reviewers said they detected a mild scent that they didn't like even though there's no added fragrance.

How we test dryer sheets

best dryer sheets person placing a dryer sheet in the dryer
Philip Friedman

When we test dryer sheets, we use standard mixed loads of cotton items, like sheets, towels, T-shirts and more. Then we add some synthetic items, such as acrylic sweaters and nylon socks, to help create static. We first feel and rate every item for softness before wetting the load, then it goes into the dryer with one softener sheet.

At the end of the cycle, we remove each item and rate it for softness again, calculating the percent of improvement in softness after one wash. We also take note of how easy items are to separate, any that are clinging together and if there is any residual static.

We continue washing and drying the load repeatedly, stopping after the fifth and tenth washes to rate the change or improvement in softness over time and observe any buildup, color change or impact on the absorbency of towels, using a standard absorbency test from our Textiles Lab. We also gauge how strong the fragrance is and how long it lasts. Finally we measure the size of each sheet and review the packaging and label directions for thoroughness, accuracy and and safety warnings or first aid instructions that need to be present.

What to look for when shopping for dryer sheets

double line break

Most dryer sheets add softness, reduce wrinkles and prevent static. But beyond that, certain factors will determine which brand you should buy.

✔️ Scent. Fragrance options range from exotic island scents to flower gardens to no scent at all. The one that wins you over is ultimately up to you. One person's "lovely" can be another's "horrible," per consumer reviews. If you prefer to avoid scents altogether, many brands now offer fragrance-free options.

✔️ Ingredients. If the environment is a top priority, look for dryer sheets qualifying as a USDA Certified Biobased Product and those made with plant-based ingredients and/or essential oils. For allergies or sensitive skin issues, choose dryer sheets free of dyes and fragrances.

✔️ Cost. Avoid big multipacks until you're sure you like a product's scent and performance. Then, buying in bulk can save money. Beyond Lavender Dryer Sheets came down to 6 cents each vs. 10 cents each if we ordered a case of 12 boxes on the company's website, with free shipping.

✔️ Softening. The larger the sheet, the more softness it will impart to a load. Oversized or “mega” sheets impart the most softness.

✔️ Static. Like softness, the larger the sheet, the more static control it provides. Brands that make claims around repelling or minimizing pet hair likely have more static-control ingredients per sheet.

✔️ Number of sheets to use per load. Some brands recommend using two or more dryer sheets, depending on laundry load size. On the flip side, we found we could use 1/2 of a mega sheet to remove pet hair from just one or two items.

Are dryer sheets worth it?

double line break

Whether dryer sheets are worth using is up to personal preference. Consider the benefits (light softening, static control, scent) and the cost per sheet — some are as low as four cents, some more than a quarter. If you save time ironing or steaming and gain wrinkle resistance at home, that's worth it. Likewise, if a nice, lingering fragrance is important, many dryer sheets deliver.

How many dryer sheets should I use?

double line break

Take a look at the usage instructions. Some brands recommend using two or even three sheets depending on the size of the load. But in our experience, one sheet for each medium to large load is just fine. If your load is extra-large, you may want to use two. If you find your clothes are coming out of the dryer staticky or wrinkled, try using an extra dryer sheet. Though sheets are not designed to be cut or torn in half, some consumers do that for small loads, which probably works out just fine.

Do dryer sheets make clothing smell better?

double line break

Yes, scented dryer sheets do make laundry smell better, though they can't camouflage the odor of stinky, sweaty clothes or towels. That has to be tackled in the washing machine with detergent. But fragranced dryer sheets can add extra-good, lingering nose appeal.

Can a dryer ball take the place of a dryer sheet?

double line break

A dryer ball can help fluff up laundry by bouncing around during drying, but it generally won't prevent static cling or add softness as well as a dryer sheet does. The ball won't add any fragrance unless you add a few drops of essential oil to it or buy scented wool dryer balls.
