According to laundry lore, engineer Conrad Gaiser invented the dryer sheet in the 1960s so his wife, Audrey, could stop rushing from their top-floor apartment to the basement to add fabric softener on time. Conrad put liquid softener on flannel pieces to rock and roll in the dryer, which led to his patent for thin, coated dryer sheets. Audrey, and the rest of us, could relax a little.
