A kitchen trash can may not be the most glamorous item in your home, but it’s an item you use multiple times a day, so the right one can make a surprisingly big difference. The best trash cans open easily when your hands are full, keep odors at bay and are simple to clean. They also need to fit seamlessly into your space, whether you want something sleek and stainless steel, a dual-compartment model for easy recycling or a more decorative option.

At the Good Housekeeping Institute, we regularly test trash cans along with the many other kitchen essentials we review, updating our picks as new models launch. Our experts evaluate them for durability, ease of use, cleaning and any standout features, while also factoring in consumer feedback. Ahead, the best kitchen trash cans worth buying now.

Best Overall Kitchen Trash Can

Simplehuman 45 Liter Rectangular Trash Can

45 Liter Rectangular Trash Can

Pros

  • Features unique liner rim system to hide trash can liners
  • Includes compartments for liners and odor-reducing pods
  • Fingerprint-resistant exterior
  • Appealing, slim design

Cons

  • Simplehuman liners are required for the best fit

This sleek stainless-steel trash can from Simplehuman is a Cleaning Lab favorite, especially for smaller households. It also comes in other finishes, larger sizes and even a dual-bin can for separating recyclables. Instead of a bulky inner bucket, this model maximizes capacity (about 25% more room, according to the brand) and uses a clever liner rim system to hold bags securely in place. There’s a built-in compartment that stores up to 20 liners for quick changes, plus a slot for Simplehuman’s Odorsorb pods to help cut down on unpleasant smells.

While it doesn’t have a motion sensor, the durable steel pedal makes hands-free opening easy, and its slim, flat profile saves floor space. Carolyn Forté, Executive Director of the Good Housekeeping Cleaning Lab, has used hers for over four years and says the lid still closes as smoothly and quietly as day one. The fingerprint-resistant exterior also holds up beautifully, though she notes Simplehuman’s custom liners are best for a snug fit (though you can still use regular trash bags).

Best Value Kitchen Trash Can

Amazon Basics Smudge Resistant Rectangular Trash Can With Soft-Close Foot Pedal

Smudge Resistant Rectangular Trash Can With Soft-Close Foot Pedal

Pros

  • Offered in several capacities
  • Smudge-resistant finish

Cons

  • Doesn’t include any special features

This no-frills stainless steel trash can is a solid pick if you want something simple, practical and well-sized for everyday use. Its 30-liter (7.9-gallon) capacity makes it a convenient option for a kitchen, home office or smaller household, and the traditional design blends easily into most spaces. There aren't any true standout features, but a removable inner bucket and built-in carry handle make emptying and moving the can straightforward, while the stay-open lid is helpful for longer tasks like meal prep or cleanup.

The durable stainless-steel exterior is smudge-resistant to help prevent fingerprints, and the heavy-duty plastic bucket inside holds up to regular wear and tear. We also like the soft-close lid, which shuts quietly after you use the manual foot pedal.

Best Motion Sensor Kitchen Trash Can

Simplehuman Voice + Motion Dual Compartment Rectangular Sensor Can

Voice + Motion Dual Compartment Rectangular Sensor Can

Pros

  • Motion sensor for hands-free opening
  • Two compartments
  • Slim, sleek design

Cons

  • Requires batteries or outlet
  • Sensor can be a bit slow

This dual-compartment trash can is designed to make kitchen cleanup almost effortless. Built-in motion sensors let you wave to open the lid — handy when your hands are messy from cooking — and according to the brand, you can even say “open can” thanks to its three built-in microphones. Lab tests found the sensor generally responsive, though occasionally a touch slow.

The can’s two compartments include a 34-liter side and a slightly smaller 24-liter side, making it easy to separate trash and recyclables. Inside, one compartment there's a removable plastic bucket with a handle, while the other is designed for liners. Like other Simplehuman models, it’s also compatible with the brand’s Odorsorb pods. Just keep in mind: This trash can requires either an outlet or AA batteries to power the motion and voice features.

How we tested kitchen trash cans

double line break

The product analysts at the Good Housekeeping Institute first scour the web to learn about what shoppers are searching for. We then apply our knowledge of the cleaning and cooking industries to look for key features that you'll find in a high-quality kitchen trash can, such as materials, size, opening mechanisms, special features and more. Our picks are comprised of trash can brands that we've previously tested and trust, ones our Lab experts have tested in their own homes and trash cans with rave consumer reviews.

How to control kitchen trash can odors

double line break

Here are a few key tips from our Cleaning experts to control stinky kitchen trash odors:

  • Whenever possible, wrap food scraps in any foil or plastic wrap that you're also discarding to contain odors.
  • Stash particularly smelly foods, like leftovers that have gone bad, in the fridge or freezer before putting them in the can on trash day.
  • If the trash starts to smell, sprinkle some baking soda on top to help absorb any funky odors.
  • Place a small-space odor remover, like this GH Seal Star Febreze Small Spaces, under the trash can liner for continuous freshening.

Where is the best place to put a trash can in the kitchen?

double line break

According to Forté, your kitchen trash can should be accessible but not the center of attention. "Place it as close to the sink as possible, but tucked into a corner or against a wall or island so it's not so obvious in the room," she says.

What to look for when shopping for a kitchen trash can

double line break

✔️ Capacity: One of the most popular kitchen trash can sizes is 13 gallons (or 50 liters). According to Papantoniou, this size is suitable for a full-sized family that will take the trash out a couple of times per week. You can also opt for an even smaller trash can or one that's divided into compartments. When considering capacity, "make sure it's easy enough to find trash bags," Papantoniou says. "You may not want to be beholden to a brand's proprietary trash bags."

✔️ Number of compartments: Many trash cans offer two compartments so you have the option to recycle too. These compartments are split into two, and sometimes the trash side is larger. "Trash cans that are divided equally in half are usually more helpful as recycling tends to be bulkier and takes up more space, Papantoniou says. Forté also suggests considering whether the inner compartments are removable or not. "Removable inner bins make cleaning easier and quicker rather than having to clean the entire can," she says.

✔️ Shape: Trash cans come in all sorts of shapes: rectangular, round, D-shaped (half-round) and more. As a rule of thumb, rectangular trash cans can be pushed up against a wall or counter, while round ones may be less obtrusive or noticeable in a room.

✔️ Opening mechanism: Because you'll be constantly opening up your trash can, it's important that it's easy to open. Some trash cans feature a foot pedal, while others have a touch lid, swing lid, a motion sensor or are manual. "Look for a long, wide foot pedal you can easily step on," Papantoniou suggests. "A touch lid might be a nuisance but they're still easy to use, while manual trash cans are easy to use but fastest to dirty. Motion sensors indicate no touch, but these can easily break or not always work."

✔️ Diameter of opening: A wide opening makes it easier to fit everything into your trash can. When possible, choose a larger opening.

✔️ Material: Most trash cans are made of stainless steel or plastic or a combination of both. (Stainless steel trash cans may have inner plastic liners, lids or rims.) Stainless steel is durable and looks stylish, but can smudge, dent and rust. A fingerprint- and stain-resistant finish is a must to help keep it looking clean. Plastic is lightweight and easy to clean but is also porous, so it may hold onto odors and over time it can dry out and crack.

✔️ Lid: Ask yourself whether you want a lid that stays open or one that's removable as this will make it easier to clean.
