Anyone who's tried to juggle healthy eating with a modern life knows the struggle of getting anything else done in a day beyond the grocery shopping, dicing, and cooking required to stick to a meal plan. It's why meal delivery services have become so popular.

While most fall into one of two camps—fresh, chef-driven options for foodies, or calorie-controlled meal plans that lean a little too heavily on bland diet food—BistroMD aims to satisfy the need for something in between. Founded in 2005 by physician Dr. Caroline J. Cederquist, it's one of the few services created by a medical doctor with the explicit goal of combining food-as-medicine with the convenience of chef-prepared, ready-to-heat meals.

With a menu of more than 150 rotating dishes and nutrition programs tailored for a range of conditions, including diabetes, heart health, and menopause, BistroMD stands out in the crowded meal delivery space for its clinical credibility. It's on the Good Housekeeping Institute Nutrition and Fitness Lab's lists of the best meal delivery services for weight loss and the best low-sodium ones. But does it deliver on taste, convenience, and value? Our testers (and dietitians) dug in to find out. I also ordered a week of lunches and dinners to experience the service first-hand.

BistroMD is a subscription-based, frozen meal delivery service focused on weight loss and long-term wellness. The meal plans are doctor-designed with input from registered dietitians and prepared by chefs. Each week, you can choose from a rotating menu of over 150 meals, with the option to add snacks, such as protein bars, designed to keep your metabolism humming.

The service caters to a wide range of dietary needs with seven distinct programs:

  • Signature Program: Balanced, doctor-designed meals for healthy weight loss.
  • Diabetic-Friendly: 25 grams or fewer net carbs per meal to support blood sugar control.
  • Keto Flex: A low-carb “metabolic reset” designed to curb cravings and jumpstart fat loss.
  • Heart Healthy: Meals with less than 600 milligrams of sodium and 3.5 grams of saturated fat, aligned with American Heart Association guidelines.
  • Menopause Program: Targets insulin and blood sugar stability to support energy and fat metabolism.
  • Gluten-Free: Meals for those with gluten sensitivity or celiac disease.
  • Vegan: Plant-based, high-protein options for a balanced approach to vegan eating.

How BistroMD works

Signing up starts with a personalization quiz that matches you with the right program. From there, you can customize your weekly plan:

  • Full program seven days ($219.80): Seven breakfasts, seven lunches, six dinners, and an open night (a.k.a. your cheat night) to enjoy your favorite meal or practice healthy eating outside the program
  • Full program five days ($189.95): Five breakfasts, five lunches, five dinners
  • Lunch and dinner seven days ($189.95): Seven lunches and seven dinners
  • Lunch and dinner five days ($149.90): Five lunches and five dinners

Shipping costs a flat $19.95. Meals are flash-frozen and shipped nationwide (excluding Hawaii and Alaska) via FedEx. The available delivery days vary depending on your location.

Managing your subscription is relatively straightforward, though cancellations require logging into your account and scrolling down to find the cancellation option.

Meals rotate weekly, with popular dishes available on the menu week after week. You can either select your own meals each week or let BistroMD automatically select them based on your program and meal preferences. You can make changes to your order or skip the week up to your scheduled cutoff deadline, which depends on your location.

Meal choices

The menu prioritizes healthy preparation methods—such as baking, steaming, and roasting—over frying. Stefani Sassos, director of the Good Housekeeping Institute Nutrition and Fitness Lab, says the options are particularly well-suited for older adults, people with chronic illnesses, or anyone seeking clinically informed nutrition support.

"Very few competitors provide meal plans specifically tailored to chronic disease management, says Sassos. "BistroMD is one of the only services that truly delivers on diabetic- and heart-healthy claims with carefully curated menus."

The Heart Healthy plan includes strict caps on sodium and saturated fat, aligning with AHA guidelines. Additionally, the Gluten-Free program meets FDA standards, a significant benefit for individuals with celiac disease. The only downside is that some of the website language leans heavily on diet and weight loss messaging, which can feel outdated and restrictive.

When selecting meals online, you can click on the dish for a detailed description, ingredient list, and nutritional information that helps you make informed decisions. While meal modifications aren't available, you can opt out of receiving some items. In the meal preferences tab, search by ingredients and exclude any entrées from all orders.

    My experience testing BistroMD

    Ordering and meal selection

Signing up was quick and easy, as was browsing the menu and using the filters. The quiz indicated that the Signature program was the best fit for me. I selected lunch and dinner options, taking care to pick a range of proteins and include vegan meals. I was not given a choice for a delivery day.

BistroMD leaves little to chance, building your weekly menu to create a specific balance of macronutrients and nutrients each day. For this reason, they recommend swapping out entire days (such as Wednesday's selections with Friday's) or meals and snacks within the same day (you could eat Wednesday's lunch for dinner and vice versa).

When customizing my lunch and dinner options, I was guided to choose from "nutritionally balanced" options that were nutritionally compatible with the original meal selected for my menu.

Once your order is complete, BistroMD gives you a detailed plan for the week, including which meals to have for lunch and which to have for dinner every day. If you opted for breakfasts and/or snacks, they will also be included in the rundown. Since I did not, my meal plan offered guidelines with suggested calories and macronutrients to aim for, along with breakfast and snack ideas and easy recipes. I thought this added support was helpful to ensure my diet didn't go off the rails anytime I wasn't eating a prescribed meal.

    Unboxing the meals

I never received a delivery notification via email or text. Still, my week's worth of meals arrived on time and in good condition, packed in a cardboard shipping box lined with compostable insulation and bags of dry ice, which kept the meals frozen solid. (One tester noted that one of their meals arrived with a cracked container, and another tester had an issue with there being no dry ice in the box.)

The only issue with my order was that, in addition to my order printout and meal plan, the box also contained someone else's sheet and, presumably, their snacks, including protein bars, trail mix, and jerky. (They were delicious.)

Each plastic meal tray was stamped with a "use by" date that goes into 2026 and even 2027 if kept frozen. Most components—including trays and cardboard sleeves—were curbside recyclable. The insulation was curbside compostable.

    Prep and cooking

There was no prep required. The meal sleeves include reheating instructions with options for both oven and microwave use.

The oven instructions are somewhat vague: remove the film cover and heat at 325°F until the food reaches an internal temperature of 165°F. Without a specific time frame to reference, I began checking the internal temperature after 10 minutes, but it ultimately took about 45 minutes for my meal to reach the desired temperature.

The microwave instructions indicate that for the best results, thaw the meal in the refrigerator the night before, then microwave on high for three to four minutes. Or from frozen, heat for four to five minutes.

I personally get nervous about heating food in plastic, so I transferred my meals into glass food storage containers before heating, which was easy enough.

    Taste

    Good Housekeeping/Perry Santanachote

Here’s where BistroMD divided opinions among our testers. While we all appreciated the convenience and nutritional balance, flavor was hit or miss.

Overall, the meals tasted healthier and less processed than supermarket frozen meals. They don't skimp on vegetables, which is so refreshing to see in a meal delivery service, and much appreciated. Seafood dishes, such as those featuring salmon, received high ratings among testers. The fish tasted fresh, moist, and flavorful. However, many chicken and pasta meals were bland, and some foods, such as whole-muscle meats and vegetable chunks, had a spongy texture.

On the other hand, dishes featuring leafy greens and ground meat, such as the bacon cheeseburger meatloaf, chicken tikka masala meatballs, and parmesan chicken patty, tasted great and were unaffected by having been frozen. The same applies to bean and lentil-based dishes, such as the tarka dal curry. Since BistroMD meals are low in sodium, I also found that dishes that incorporate robust spices tended to be more flavorful.

The portions were small yet filling, though some reported feeling hungry again within a couple of hours. (That's what those snacks are for!)

    Nutrition

Overall, BistroMD meals align with Good Housekeeping’s nutrition philosophy. Meals average around 360 calories and, while not organic, BistroMD uses:

    • rBGH-free beef
    • Hormone-free chicken (per U.S. law)
    • Environmentally responsible seafood
    • Produce sourced from family-owned farms when possible

According to BistroMD, their meal plans are designed to provide a balanced mix of nutrients to help you lose weight without losing lean muscle, while keeping you energized and satisfied throughout the day.

The program aims to fuel metabolism, stabilize blood sugar, keep you satiated, and support heart health by making sure each meal includes:

    • 25–30 grams of lean protein
    • 20–25 grams of net carbs, using low-glycemic ingredients that deliver steady energy
    • 5 grams of fiber to curb cravings
    • 8–12 grams of healthy fats and around 500 milligrams of sodium per meal

In addition to the detailed meal plan, members can also find nutrition support and educational resources, including blog posts on the website, which I found informative and actionable.

The bottom line: Is BistroMD worth it?

bistromd tikka meatballs on a kitchen counter
      Good Housekeeping/Perry Santanachote

BistroMD is best for people managing chronic conditions like diabetes, heart disease, and menopause, and individuals seeking weight loss support. It’s less ideal for families or those on a tight budget. And if you’re looking for a delicious, restaurant-worthy meal, this may not be it.

BistroMD sits on the higher end of the prepared meal delivery market. Average cost per meal ranges from $10.50 to $13.50. However, the tradeoff is clear. For the price, you receive a clinically designed, condition-specific program that can help you achieve your health goals, particularly if you're seeking to improve your body composition.

Our testers felt the price was justified given the convenience and results—several even reported losing weight within the first week.
