There’s nothing quite like the smell of fresh bread wafting through the kitchen. It's hard to resist eating a piece of just-baked bread immediately, whether you like it plain or with a pat of butter. Homemade also bread takes your toast and sandwiches to the next level. With a bread maker, you can enjoy a hot, golden loaf at home, without the effort of mixing or kneading by hand. Bread machines allow you to add the ingredients, press a button, and in a few hours, you have a loaf of piping-hot bread. It doesn't stop at white bread, either. Most have settings for wheat bread, whole grain, sweet breads, plus many more, and even jam.
Here in the Good Housekeeping Institute Kitchen Appliances and Innovation Lab, we test kitchen appliances and baking tools throughout the year. One of my most recent tests involved baking over a dozen loaves of bread for stand mixers. I've also tested other baking-related items, such as hand mixers, cake decorating tools, and more. I've been a home baker for as long as I can remember, and over the last decade, I have become increasingly passionate about baking, as I often make my own gluten-free baked goods.
To find the best bread makers, I made 30 loaves of bread in seven of the newest and most popular bread makers. I made two different white bread recipes, a cranberry walnut bread and a gluten-free loaf, in each machine. I evaluated each bread maker based on its performance in baking bread and ease of use. I also recruited some staff members to taste-test each loaf of bread and provide feedback on the texture and taste.
