With so many types of vacuums — uprights, canister vacuums, vacuum mops and even pet-specific models — it can be overwhelming to know where to start your search. But the cleaning pros at the Good Housekeeping Institute say focusing on a reliable brand like Shark is a smart first step.

Shark vacuums consistently perform well in the Good Housekeeping Institute’s Home Care and Cleaning Lab tests, which is why we confidently recommend them. They’re known for convenience, user-friendly designs and versatile models — many of the brand's uprights convert to handheld or canister vacuums for flexible cleaning. Plus, they’re often reasonably priced for the performance they deliver. If Shark is on your radar (and it should be), we’ve rounded up the top-tested, top-rated vacuums from the brand across multiple categories.

    Best Overall

    Shark Stratos Upright Vacuum

    Stratos Upright Vacuum

    Pros

    • HEPA filter
    • Converts from an upright to a stick or canister
    • Built-in odor neutralizer to help bad odors from forming inside

    Cons

    • On the heavier side

The Shark Stratos is our top overall pick for its impressive combination of power, versatility and ease of use. Assembly is a breeze — everything clicks together smoothly and securely — and the design feels sturdy and well thought-out, from the large carry handle to the oversized to clearly labeled controls. Even the dust cup is generously sized and opens from both the top and bottom for quick emptying and easy cleaning.

In our tests, the Stratos handled every type of mess we threw at it: fine debris like sugar, large pieces like rice, long hair and even embedded pet hair. Its dual brush-roll nozzle, which features a soft roller for bare floors and a deep-cleaning brush for carpets, left hardwood, tile grout, and high-pile rugs equally spotless, with no hair tangling on the brush roll. We also like that a sealed system and HEPA filter keep dust and allergens trapped inside. And for homes with pets, the odor-neutralizing feature is an added bonus, even if the scent is subtle.

Beyond strong cleaning performance, the lift-off canister and stretch hose (with over eight feet of reach) make it easy to clean stairs, upholstery and hard-to-reach spots. On the downside, this unit is on the heavier and bulkier side, but overall the Shark Stratos is one of the most intuitive and reliable Shark vacuums we've tested.

    Navigator Lift-Away Deluxe Upright Vacuum

    Pros

    • Can be used as upright and canister vacuum
    • Sealed HEPA system
    • Washable filters

    Cons

    • Cannot adjust carpet height

The Shark Navigator Lift-Away Deluxe offers many of the features of our top pick at a fraction of the price and earning strong reviews from users. It easily converts from an upright to a canister for cleaning different areas, plus has a sealed HEPA system to trap dust and allergens.

While it doesn’t include a carpet-height adjustment, the brush roll can be turned off, making it effective on both high-pile carpets and hard floors. Users also praise its strong suction and versatile attachments, including crevice and upholstery tools. We also appreciate the washable filters and bagless dustbin for mess-free emptying.

    Best Robot

    Shark AI Ultra Robot Vacuum

    AI Ultra Robot Vacuum

    Pros

    • Has obstacle detection and avoidance abilities
    • Dock has a HEPA filter
    • Cleans on a predictable grid

    Cons

    • Bagless dustbin may allow particles to become airborne

Self-emptying robot vacuums usually come with a hefty price tag, but the Shark AI Ultra is one of the more budget-friendly options without skimping on features. It follows a predictable grid pattern rather than random paths, maps your space efficiently and has laser navigation that reliably detects and avoids obstacles. The companion app lets you set no-go zones, send the robot to specific areas, or schedule cleanings, while onboard controls allow starting, stopping, or docking without the app.

In our tests, it picked up all hard debris and even returned to spots it initially missed. The base includes a HEPA filter to capture dust, though the bagless dustbin can release some particles when emptied. Overall, it’s a smart option for hands-off cleaning at a lower price than many competitors.

Dustbin capacity (on robot): 230 mL | Dustbin capacity (on base): 60 days, according to brand | Battery runtime: 120 min.

    Best Stick

Shark Rocket Deluxe Pro Corded Stick Vacuum

Rocket Deluxe Pro Corded Stick Vacuum

    Pros

    • Lightweight and easy to maneuver
    • LED headlights illuminate dust
    • Converts to a handheld

    Cons

    • No HEPA filter

Shark is one of the few brands to offer a corded stick vacuum, and this model is worth considering for its strong pickup power on both hardwood floors and carpet. Like many of our favorite Shark vacuums, it converts into a handheld for quick clean-ups and includes crevice and pet tools for tight spots and upholstery.

We love how lightweight it is, too. At just 8.6 pounds, it's nearly half the weight of our top overall pick. Swivel steering and a near-flat profile make it easy to clean under furniture, while LED headlights help ensure no spot is missed. The main drawback: It doesn’t include a HEPA filter.

    WANDVAC Handheld Vacuum

    Pros

    • Comes with two attachments
    • Good suction power
    • Lightweight

    Cons

    • Short runtime

Shark’s WANDVAC combines a sleek, slim design with impressive cleaning power, making it easy to tuck into a corner or even a cabinet so you don't have to look at it all day. Despite its size, users praise its strong suction and a dustbin large enough that you won’t need to empty it after every use.

With just two buttons, operation is simple. Press one to power the unit and another to release the dustbin. It also comes with two handy attachments: a pet tool and a crevice tool. We just wish the battery life was better. It only lasts about 10 minutes per charge—less than half that of our top overall handheld vacuum.

      How we test Shark vacuums

a shark upright vacuum on a testing machine
      Jill Sollazzo

In the Good Housekeeping Institute Cleaning Lab, we have tested hundreds of different vacuum cleaners including self-emptying robot vacuums, cordless stick vacuums, car vacuums and many more. We're constantly testing new products across categories.

As a member of ASTM International's F11 Vacuum Cleaner Committee, we also meet twice yearly with engineers and technical representatives from vacuum cleaner brands to help develop and shape the vacuum cleaner test standards we all use to assess performance, ease of use, durability and more. All vacuums are tested exactly the same way, based on ASTM International industry standard test methods, for accurate performance.

Using a custom-built, automated machine (pictured) that makes the same number of passes over the same test carpeting, we objectively measure how well each vacuum removes dirt deeply embedded into medium-pile carpet. We even have a separate machine to clean the carpets between test runs.

We also look at how well the vacuums each suck up large and small debris, like gritty sand and dried orzo pasta, from hard flooring and even use industry-standard rayon fibers to simulate pet hair. We also assess how close each appliance gets to edges and how much suction they draw through any attachments.

Each vacuum is tested for maneuverability, the ease of the controls and how simple it is to empty and clean the dust cup or change the bag too. The battery runtimes for cordless vacuum cleaners are also checked.

What to look for when shopping for Shark vacuums

      double line break

✔️ Type: Shark doesn’t just make canister vacuums. Most of the brand's uprights convert to portable canisters for better reach and cleaning above the floor.

      • Corded upright vacuums clean well on both hard floors and carpets, plus offer unlimited runtimes but tend to be larger and heavier than other options.
      • Cordless stick vacuums are slim and lightweight — good for smaller spaces — and can better reach under furniture. On the downside, they have shorter runtimes and smaller dustbins.
      • Canister vacuums are sort of a happy medium, since they're easier to carry but generally have comparable power and capacity to uprights. They're also convenient for homes with stairs, since they're easier to carry and have long hoses to clean hard-to-reach areas.
      • Handheld vacuums are useful for small messes and places like the car.
      • Robots work autonomously, so they're a great option for those who don’t have time to take out the vacuum or broom every day.

✔️ Bag vs. bagless: The vast majority of Shark vacuums are bagless. With bagless vacuums, you don't have to worry about replacements, but the downside is you have to deal with emptying the dustbin, which can be messy. For this reason, bagged vacuums are better for allergy sufferers.

✔️ Attachments: For more cleaning prowess, we highly recommend vacuums with attachments like a crevice tool, a pet tool and upholstery or dusting brushes. Crevice tools are helpful for vacuuming dust in tight spots, high spaces and behind heavy furniture. Motorized pet attachments are key if you have a pet that sheds a lot. Dusting brushes and upholstery attachments are also good for getting dust and hair off furniture without causing any damage.
